LOGLINE: A young farmer in colonial America, oppressed by the British Empire, joins the revolutionary war to defend his liberty.

The protagonist is an ordinary middle class citizen, oppressed by the wealthy aristocratic Tory's and the British Crown.

I want the theme to be "if someone controls you, you aren't free".
Am I correct in assuming that the theme is the thesis world? If so, then I assume the antithesis world of Break Into Two would involve characters who "if you're free, no one controls you".
And a synthesis of the two worlds would be "you can be free, by controlling yourself"

I'm having trouble coming up with an internal problem for the character that relates to the theme. I figured the Status=Death would be that his family doesn't want him joining the Sons of Liberty, but also that they are becoming impoverished under the tyrannical British Acts and tax laws.

I figured I would need a protagonist who feels upside down in a world that no one controls - the Sons of Liberty and the colonial militia: people joined voluntarily, they could leave at any time, there was little order.
That would mean he starts in a very controlled world where he isn't free to make his own decisions.

I'm struggling with the genre, because I'm having trouble alining the hero's decisions with historical events.

I thought it might be FT because he is a complete underdog going up against the Crown, and might be considered foolish by his peers for doing so (considering about 30% of colonists were loyalists).

I also considered GF, with the quest for Liberty.

And also Institutionalized, considering that he has to choose between one group or another. A 'naif' going up against the British Crown.

Just wanted an opinion what Genre other 'cats' thought would work best for this logline - and any comments about the logline itself. Very Happy

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I'd aim for Institutionalized. Just feels right

Yeah...

I started with institutionalized, but something was wrong - the examples from STC! GTTM did not correlate - it seemed like they all involved down endings.

So I tried GF, then SH, FT;
and then re-read institutionalized and realized it fit.

I think it will work with a naif and a 'burn it down' sacrifice.

Happy Writing.

It can work as an Inst. if he starts out siding with the British.

Pirates of the Caribbean was an un-traditional Inst. film, along the same lines as yours. Will started out as supporting the law-abiding British way, and it was only in Act 2 that he entered the upside-down world of law-scoffing pirates. Your hero could start out siding with the Tories, or at least unsure of where he stands, and only become a Son of Liberty as a result of Catalyst and the Debate.

Regardless of STC category, my concern is that the story does not offer anything new or exciting. If you really want to explore that period of history, it pays to consider other characters and scenarios that can make this fresh for today's reader/audience.

He needs an intensely personal reason for joining - not a high-flown, noble one like "fighting for liberty."

What if he's black. Now that would be interesting... Shocked Very Happy

Not always. Generally speaking there is something wrong with the world of Act 1. The Theme is probably somebody's point of view about how that could change or what is wrong.
