This is not a comment on if the new Batman is good or bad, as a story, or a movie. With the kind of money it’s making, I’m sure we’ll see more. This is more of a question. Is this movie possible because we live in a post 9/11 world? A film where you can blow up a large city hospital…kill lots of innocent people and “the love interest?”

Action writers worry about pushing the line, because if you push it too far so the theory goes, there’s no way to top what you’ve done. Yes, film and story change and evolve. When The Wild Bunch came out with graphic violence as never seen before, people were literally getting sick in movie theaters. Now, we think nothing of it what that film did.

So, has the new Batman changed the rules, (yes, Batman is a Superhero), but changed the rules for writing action? What do you think?

Cheers,
Martin

The Dark Knight didn't change anything as far as action violence goes. I would give Keifer Sutherland's TV series "24" some credit perhaps-- it definitely upped the ante, partly as a reaction to the fact that we have since woken up to the reality that the world is uglier than anyone wanted to admit. But I'm not sure how much of it has to do with a post-9/11 world per se. I think it's just a gradual progression. In 1977, Darth Vader blew up an entire planet without a second thought. Granted that wasn't as personal to the audience as a beloved city or character, but I think we've just become more tolerant of graphic depiction over the years. It's nothing particularly new.

Mike,

My blind side (or one of them) is I don't watch TV. But several writes and actors have given me the same answer about the new Batman and "24". Thanks!!!

Martin
