| The Breakfast Club is an Institutionalized (Issue Institution) genre, and one of the best films to ever come out of the 80s!

Thank you for your reply Joseph.
Any other films similar to it that you can think of?

Believe it or not I've never seen it. lol
I would have guessed Adolescent Passage though given that it's a John Hughes film, high school students, facing high school problems etc.
Take it for what it's worth.. I've never seen it, but I'd consider looking at Adolescent Passage too.
Maybe I'll give it a watch finally... I have no idea what the film is... this is just what I would be expecting given images and such that i've run into... |

Cheers William,
I felt AP too. Didn't really get Issue Institution - mainly because it didn't contain the multiple threads of Crash, Magnolia etc.
...you need to watch it btw ;)

Save the Cat, Page 43:
"What about the exceptions? What about Breakfast Club? Is that Rites of Passage or Institutionalized? (Answer: Institutionalized)"
It's different to most Institutionalized stories in the sense that it doesn't follow the same structure. In the end, there is no sacrifice, just an understanding of who they are, and it's the system that has to accept that as opposed to the teenagers accepting or trying to defeat the system.
There are elements of ROP in it, but it's closer to an Institutionalized than Rites of Passage. Personally, I wouldn't recommend studying this film as an example of Institutionalized genre because there is no unique protagonist fighting against a group but a group of protagonists fighting against a system they don't really want to defeat.
Wikipedia describes it as a Coming of Age drama, which it is, but structurally it's Institutionalized.
The Breakfast Club is a great film, with teenage actors who were already seasoned and had a good grasp of their skills. It's a shame John Hughes is no longer around. He was one of the best directors in the 80s. I miss his films, and the late John Candy, who was a John Hughes regular.
Unfortunately, Dirk, I can't think of any films similar to it. Sorry.

OK, so it's Issue Institution, but a poor fit for the genre...
Not the first John Hughes film to have that problem...
I will have to finally watch the film to see what on earth everyone is talking about... lol |

| The Big Chill is kind of a grown up version of Breakfast Club. The Outsiders and Stand By Me run along the same lines but have more locations. Kids of different social rank and class getting together to go through something must pull together or else.
