I'm looking for a list of films for visual ideas for my final year film that deal with the listed themes.

So far I have...

Eyes Wide Shut
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Machinist

I've also decided to reference The Shining since it was the gold room stuff that inspired the films original idea and the night scenes (boot camp) in Full Metal Jacket.

Any more you can think of would be much appreciated!

The Wilkerson article is very interesting. I'll keep that for future reference. Thanks for posting it Martin.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0039808/

Alice in Wonderland (1951)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043274/

Disney version of Lewis Carroll's Children's story. Alice becomes bored and her mind starts to wander. She sees a white rabbit who appears to be in a hurry. She chases it into its burrow and then a most bizarre series of adventures begins.

"The Twilight Zone" (1959)

The Company of Wolves (1984)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087075/

A bag full of symbolic folklore about werewolves, or, rather, their sexual connotation. Granny tells her granddaughter Rosaleen strange, disturbing tales about innocent maidens falling in love with handsome, heavily eyebrowed strangers with a smoldering look in their eyes; about sudden disappearances of spouses when the moon is round & the wolves are howling in the woods; about babies found inside stork eggs, in a stork nest high up a tree; etc., etc. Of course the story of Little Red Ridinghood is also present, with a very handsome he-wolf! (And of course this he-wolf consumes Grandmother, but 'consumes' Little Red Ridinghood). All the stories are somehow reducible to loss of innocence, and fear of/hunger for (a newly acquired sense of) sexuality; their Freudian character is mirrored in their dreamlike shapes. This movie is not really a horror movie; it's more a multiple tale about growing up into adolescence told through dreams.

Field of Dreams (1989)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097351/

An Iowa corn farmer, hearing voices, interprets them as a command to build a baseball diamond in his fields; he does, and the Chicago Black Sox come.

Lucid is the story of two men, Case and Drake, who share one consciousness, connected by their dreams...

Peggy Sue Got Married (1986)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091738/

Peggy Sue faints at a Highschool reunion. When she wakes up she finds herself in her own past, just before she finished school.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100998/

In Dreams (1999)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120710/

Claire Cooper dreams strange things from time to time. One night, she dreams about a little girl being taken away by a stranger...

Big Fish (2003)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0319061/

A story about a son trying to learn more about his dying father by reliving stories and myths his father told him about himself.

The Fountain (2006)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0414993/

Spanning over one thousand years, and three parallel stories, The Fountain is a story of love, death, spirituality, and the fragility of our existence in this world.

Click (2006/I)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0389860/

A workaholic architect finds a universal remote that allows him to fast-forward and rewind to different parts of his life. Complications arise when the remote starts to overrule his choices.

Youth Without Youth (2007)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0481797/

A love story wrapped in a mystery. Set in Europe before WWII, a timid professor is changed by a cataclysmic event and explores the mysteries of life.

I enjoyed Dreamscape, which came out in 1984. A plot summary from IMDB: A man who can enter and manipulate people's dreams is recruited by a government agency to help cure the President of the United States of his nightmares about nuclear war but finds a conspiracy is hiding the true reason behind the research.

For some reason I read this as "to a magical land in a tomato." Laughing
Good list, Kevan!

That's right, actually. She was a bit slow, and had to ketchup.

Shocked

I thought it was catsup as in

"That catsup in Michigan where it gets real cold."

For all the youngsters here the word written on the bottle of Heinz used to be spelled catsup rather than ketchup. I'm afraid the pride of Wisconsin is soon to become cheeze as well. The world is going to hell in a handbasket.

Laughing Laughing Laughing

I thought you guys would have fun with that! Very Happy

But you gotta admit, "ketchup" reads a lot better than "cat soup." A person could get in trouble over cat soup around here. . . Laughing
