Got back from seeing it, not bad.
I really have to give props to the make-up department as well as Joseph Gordon-Levitt's observance of Bruce Willis' mannerisms.

Recently I watched Looper. Anyone else feel like the telekinesis was DMJ? I think he might have avoided that by introducing it differently. If it had been introduced immediately as part of the world, it might have been more acceptable to me.
The ending was predictable, but it was mostly enjoyable over all so I forgave that.

Yes it did feel like DMJ to me as well. My personal feeling is that the story could have stood on its own without the telekinesis. I liked the movie but I didn't get the wow factor that other people appear to have gotten. Maybe the DMJ was part of it. I didn't think the older / younger self was done as well here as Josh Brolin did it in MIB3.
I think the ending was powerful but left some questions as to how time travel works and how such an action would affect it.

the reason it would have made sense to at least some how hint at the TK factor in the opening of the story is because telekinesis came first chronologically in the story...
Cid was a TK before he came to control time travel.
so, time travel was actually the double-mumbo jumbo bit, since TK came first
but, the way the story unfolded on-screen left us to believe it was a time-travel story
but, since Cid was the controlling factor using TK and time travel, I'm not sure it quite qualifies as double mumbo jumbo
Cid the TK was determined to exact revenge for the death of his mother if not save her from that fate, so he waited and either gained control of time travel by gaining control of criminal sydicates in 2074, or it's possible Cid invented time travel or at least used his criminal empire to control the sciences and force them to invent time travel specifically for Cid's use in exacting revenge for his mom's death.
It is shown that TK Cid the Kid was technologically and mechanically proficient, in the way he boosted the signal of the frog beeper warning system on the farm. It's not too far-fetched to consider the possibility that Cid's intelligence grew along with his TK abilities as he aged, so much so that he could have developed time travel while he was wresting control over criminal underworld
Cid the Kid TK master needed time travel to exact revenge and save his mom in the past, so he used his TK skillz to take control of crime and invent time travel.
is it still double mumbo jumbo if Cid the TK was responsible for time travel? he just became the evil mastermind underlord who did everything he had to do to achieve his goals, which included controlling-- if not inventing/developing-- time travel.
seems like it could fit and work, given what few details we were given in regard to Cid's character, growth and development...
still, maybe DMJ, but might still make sense, no?_________________ Snarky is the new Black... with a VAMPIRE! ;-)

| I would still lean towards DMJ because it is two distinct forms of "magic" that we are being asked to believe in...telekinesis and time travel...even if one sprouted the other.

That might not even be a screenplay problem, could have been a film editing problem. Either way, establishing a fantasy world at once would have solved the DMJ issue.

| You folks are back and forth concerning what you understand about screenwriting, and possibly even story structure.

I felt it opened right up with both the time travel and the TK. It was part of the opening voiceover and introduction to the setting. Therefore, I didn't feel it was DMJ at all.
I LOVED how they dealt with the time-travel, meet thyself conundrum...by stating point blank 'never mind asking those questions, you'll just end up going round and round, and it won't make and f*cking difference' (diner scene). Brilliant. Felt like Austin Powers all over again.
And Joseph, careful about that Pandora's Box you just opened...likely to bite you in the butt. There ARE professional screenwriters in here, you know. =)

Big deal! Like they can't be questioned!
To quote Mike Rinaldi from another thread: "What can I say about "respected industry professionals"... they don't all know everything." Nobody passed comment on that, I see. Maybe because Mike's a professional, and no one saw fit to.
For the record, I liked Looper. I don't think it deserves the praise people are giving it. I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt deserves praise for his observations of Bruce Willis's mannerisms, but the telekinesis storyline, regardless of it being established from the beginning, was definitely double mumbo jumbo, if only because of the way it was incorporated into the plot. And that is a "professional" screenwriter's fault.
I also thought the ending was rubbish; but otherwise enjoyed it, which seems to be the least you can hope for from a Hollywood film these days.
