At this moment I am on day three of a five day trip helping chaperone 36 eighth graders across the state of Georgia.

Yesterday we were in Savannah and watched production on Robert Redford’s film The Conspirator.

Extra’s in 1860’s costume were in abundance. On a visit to Fort Palauski we watched the set builders constructing the gallows where Mary Surratt will be hanged. We also visited locations from Forrest Gump and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Very cool stuff.

In 1977 I was standing inside Ft Pulaski in 1860's dress as an extra for "The Lincoln Conspiracy." They had also built a gallows there for the hanging scene, just as you described for Clint's new movie. What an odd way for history to repeat itself!

My brother was also an extra, one of the soldiers marching the prisoners to the gallows.

I was in high school at the time. It was my first time on a movie set and it was an interesting introduction into the nuts and bolts of how it was done.

Hey Jennifer,
Cool story. Thanks for sharing. I had a similar high school experience when Hollywood came to my small town in Alabama to film a movie, Kent State. I got to work in the wardrobe department and as an extra.
Now my kids get a kick out of watching a much younger me walk across a field in the opening sequence. That's when I was bitten by the bug.

Can you find yourself or your brother in The Lincoln Conspiarcy?

Last week in Savannah I got to release my inner redneck by "hollaring" out the window at the extra's dressed as Union soliders. "Go home damn Yankees" much to chagrin of my thirteen year old who said, "Alright Dad, that's enough."
