We all know that the first Rocky was of course a Golden Fleece. But I was watching the fourth installment the other day - with the fearsome Ivan Drago - and had reason to suspect that this film was a Superhero story.
Am I right?
All through the opening Apollo and Rocky are constantly saying how fighters are different from everybody else - they're made differently! Drago's strength is referred to as "freakish". I think that I even spotted a crucifiction reference when Rocky is scrambling up the snow-covered mountain shouldering a huge log.
Any thoughts?

| I haven't watched it in years, but from memory, I'd say so. Right down to the much stronger antagonist. Rocky even loses his "power" at one point.

I am thinking similarly yes.
On the one hand you expect the sequels to use the same genre otherwise their fans may be upset...but you would be surprised to see how many films miss this mark...
Jaws 2 and 3 are DWAP, not MITH (Jaws 1 was directed by Spielberg, the following 2 films were not)
Same with Jurrassic Park
JP 1 is MITH but the sequels JP2 and 3 I would say are DWAP. There are mistakes made by the heroes, but I don't get the sense of any overwhelming sin either...
JP 1 and JP 2 were directed by spielberg, but jp 3 again was not
In the case of Rocky, Rocky 1 was directed by Avildsen, but the sequels were directed by Stallone
I am thinking when a new director takes over the sequels take a new route...and hence possibly a new genre...
I could look into other sequels as well I suppose..

actually, ROCKY II could be considered the start of the Superhero genre for the franchise, with various new Nemeses in follow-up installments... right?? so, to Stallone, Rocky is and was always a Superhero, since all of Stallone-as-Director installments are Superhero stories.
ROCKY = GF, Rocky's quest for self-respect, to not be such a bum, to get his locker back etc etc... self-respect
ROCKY II = Rocky, the home-town 'hero' with a heart as big as the city of Phillidelphia (his special power is his heart... 'you're all heart Rock...' etc...) Creed becomes more of a Nemesis this time, because HE wants some aspect of his self-respect back after going the distance with some club-fighter mob bum; nobody goes the distance with Creed, humiliates the Champ like that! NOBODY! and Rocky's curse is the dreadful doubt, respect and esteem issues he is still dealing with, in addition to being Southpaw, all of which Mickey tries desperately to retrain out of him in order to shock the world. In the end, Rocky resists switching from his Southpaw club-fighter ways 'No tricks... no tricks... I ain't switchin'...' manages to overcome all his fears and doubts, and beats Apollo to his feet at the final bell, in Superhero style... or something...
